Road race in Durban

There is good news for road racing fans. Road races are very dynamic, athletes develop great speeds, this is a truly spectacular event. During the pandemic, such competitions were limited. And on September 11, the Tour of Durban will take place, where athletes will be able to show their skills on a difficult track.

Road racing cyclists are showing great interest in the upcoming event. They have long wanted to participate in an event with a traditional long race, with difficult sections and climbs.

Due to the pandemic, riders were offered a three-lap track on a 135-kilometer freeway. After the restrictions are lifted, the event will become much more complicated and much more interesting.

The start of the race will be given outside the Moses Mabhida stadium, then the riders make a quick lap on the freeway, then along the branded high-speed section down the embankment and back onto the freeway. For the athletes, this is very important, because after 70 kilometers of the race, the most important climb to Pinetown will begin.

Climbing the M7 for the best road riders is the most important element of the competition, and the winners of the race are determined by its passage. A serious climb of fourteen kilometers and then overcoming its summit is the highlight of the entire Tour Durban event. Athletes seriously prepare for it before the competition.

The further race will take place in accordance with the route agreed with the traffic authorities, and from the St. John’s Avenue bridge, athletes will be taken home along the M13.

The winners of the race, taking into account all their achievements on a difficult climb and a fast descent, will be determined on the same day. The number of participants will be limited to 1000 riders. To ensure the safety of the participants of the event, road workers will be involved.

Silver medal for Daryl Impey at the Commonwealth Games

In early August 2022, a men’s road race was held at the Commonwealth Games. The fight had a special breathtaking spirit. The opponents were very serious. Daryl Impey recently recovered from Covid-19 and was unable to even compete in the Tour de France, but at the Commonwealth Games, the effects of the disease did not prevent him from performing well and finishing in second place. Silver is very worthy!

Daryl Impie from South Africa has a lot of experience in road cycling. At this race, he lost the championship to the New Zealander Aeron Gate. Although Mark Cavendish was considered the favorite before the race, during the competition he fell into a trap, lost contact with the advanced groups and did not achieve the expected success.

Geraint Thomas from Wales also claimed victory and made every effort to do so, but could not hold back Fred Wright from England. But Gate had a very high speed, no one could resist him, and he became the winner of this race.

For a long time, Morne van Niekerk was in the lead in the competition and tried to maintain the pace of the race, but then fell behind the winners and took 12th place at the finish line. Impey was grateful to him for his support.

2 more participants took part in the race, but did not achieve victory: Callum Ormiston, who became thirty-seventh, and Gustav Basson, who retired before the finish line.

Commonwealth Games accident with cyclist and fan

At the end of July 2022, an accident occurred during a cycling race at the Commonwealth Games involving English cyclist Matt Walls and a fan. The athlete at the speed of movement was thrown over the barriers directly to the audience.

It happened at the 15-kilometer race among men at the stadium in London. At the turn, Matt Walls and his bike flew over the fence. Spectators were also hurt and injured. They received medical assistance right at the velodrome. At first, they tried to help Matt on the spot, and then they sent him to the hospital by ambulance.

Other riders injured are Matt Bostock from the Isle of Man and Derek Gee from Canada. After the falls, they also ended up in the hospital with injuries. According to Bostock’s team, his CT scan showed a positive prognosis.

According to verified information, Matt Walls has no serious or life-threatening injuries, and he has already been discharged from the hospital with light bruises.

Witnesses to the crash confirmed that spectators were unable to see the crash due to the sharp curve at that section of the track. The fences held back the cyclists, so Derek Gee, although he fell very hard, did not fly out over the fence.

According to athlete Laura Kenny, there are more and more dangerous situations in sports. This is due to the fact that the speeds increase, and the postures of cyclists change and become extreme. Athletes get up and crash into the backs of others. In her opinion, velodromes should install protective screens or large fences to ensure the safety of athletes and spectators.
